Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Specialist

Full-Time

Under the direction of the Manager Infection Prevention and Control, the IPAC Specialist will lead the education and continuous improvement of Infection Control Prevention and Control (IPAC) programs in the home.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Infection Prevention & Control

  • Leads quality improvement processes related to antimicrobial stewardship, and collects, monitors and reports relevant data
  • Identifies and assess trends or patterns, at macro, meso, and micro levels that have health implications for residents towards adopting efforts to mitigate negative outcomes and enhance positive outcomes.
  • Facilitate a collaborative environment through role modelling and coordination of IPAC activities
  • Stay current with emerging infection control research (in consultation with the Infection Control Committee) to improve and update infection control strategies with evidenced based, best practice and prevailing practices
  • Create, implement, evaluate and support approved initiatives.
  • Participate on the Infection Control Committee (ICC)
  • Mentor and educate staff, residents and family members on prevention measures, emerging information and current best practices related to IPAC
  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders, such as Public Health, physicians, per guidelines/regulatory requirements, to report and monitor risks of communicable diseases and outbreaks, and maintain internal tracking
  • Assist in identifying the learning needs of staff related to IPAC programs, and collaborate to design overall learning strategies and interventions
  • Maintain a positive image of the facility through ongoing communication with external contacts including families and volunteers. Proactively works with leadership and communication teams to share relevant information regarding IPAC risks
  • Participates in and supports interdisciplinary teams in quality improvement initiatives evaluating the effectiveness of interventions on resident outcomes.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION & SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Certification or degree required:

  • Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses
  • IPAC Canada Certificate and IPAC Canada membership preferred; or willingness to enrol in IPAC Certificate course recommended by IPAC Canada and become a member.
  • 3-5 years of related work experience
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge of infection and prevention control in large settings, preferably long-term care, with a demonstrated commitment for continuous improvement
  • Solid understanding of the Fixing Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2021 and Regulations, Ministry of Long-Term Care Directives, the Registered Health Professionals Act, and other applicable legislation
  • Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Proven ability to impact change through role-modelling and positive influence, along with an understanding of adult learning principles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for communicating with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated highly developed skills in leadership, team building, organizational development, customer service, written and oral communications and technological proficiency.
