Dementia Guide

All of the programs offered in the Seniors Village are structured to provide a continuum of support for seniors living with dementia. We also participate in the Champlain Dementia Network and have associations with the Royal Ottawa Hospital and Alzheimers’ Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County which is located on the Perley Health premises.

The new apartments are no exception with Assisted Living Services available for those-in-need, and with four 10 studio apartments with shared kitchen, dining and living areas. The specially-designed features of all the new apartments provide security, accessibility and comfort for seniors. Tenants have easy access to health-oriented services and areas for leisure and learning activities as well as social and community events.

Community support programs include assisted living services for seniors in need whether at home in the community or living in the new apartments, and the Adult Day program and Guest House, the latter in partnership with Carefor. The Adult Day program provides a safe and stimulating daily environment for seniors with mild to mid-stage dementia. The Guest House has overnight accommodation with specially-trained staff to allow caregivers some time

Also available are Respite care in the Long-term Care Centre which provides accommodation for seniors with dementia who need extra assistance. Seniors from the community or the new apartments may use these programs, however, please note that access to our Community support programs which include Assisted Living Services require a referral from the Champlain CCAC.

The Long-term Care Centre accommodates 450 seniors in three interconnected two-storey residences of which 250 are reserved for veterans, 160 for community long-term care and 40 for short-stay convalescent or respite care. Different programs of care are available for all long-term care residents to meet individual needs both physical and cognitive. Our Special Approach program addresses more advanced dementia. This program provides a therapeutic and supportive long-term care environment to residents who are affected by dementia with associated behaviors as well as physical and functional limitations. The program focuses on providing a safe and secure environment as well as managing these limitations and behaviors to enable the residents to maintain a qualitative lifestyle.

As we become a more recognized leader in dementia care, our long-term plans call for the creation of a Centre for Applied Research in Dementia Care and be recognized as a Centre of Excellence in that special area of care.
